Anonymous asked: I think the other anon is wondering if menswear is just a fad. I wanna know what you think of the big #menswear college kid advice columns floating around. What do you wish you did in college?

Sure this so-called #menswear that has been popular for the past year or so may be an editorial fad but has it really gone away? I mean the fucking idols are dead guys that were rocking this shit 50/60 years ago! The refined tailored gear that we are seeing is just beginning and the uber rugged workwear trend that started around 6 or 7 years ago is starting to wane (though it won’t ever “go away” because it too is rooted in classics). I don’t have a problem per se with the “college kid advice columns”. At the end of the day, they are getting kids dressing better early which is cool. The thing that is tough when you contrast what they do to what guys like me that didn’t start blogging until they were in the work force is that they are in a unique situation that only last 4-6 years. Shots of me in jackets and ties on Dapper Demeanor weren’t because I decided to look sharp as hell for my final so I came to it with a sense of pride, they were because I had to wear a tie every damn day Monday through Friday because we have an office dress code. When I was in college, I dressed better than most… most days. But no lie, I had my fair share of days that I rolled out of bed 15 minutes before class and through on a hoody, baggy sweats, and some sneakers and was that tall lanky black guy that needed a haircut so he wouldn’t take his hood down in class. Some days, I knew I was going to play ball after class, so it was bball shorts, long sleeve t-shirts, black crew socks, and Adidas slides (with my court shoes in my backpack). In college, my personal style was a sort of refined urban prep, but I had not nary a well tailored blazer because that just wasn’t on my radar then.

I love seeing younger cats dressing well and doing big things, but I just hope they realize the unique situation they are in and enjoy the social experience that is college because life is NEVER like college again (most colleges anyway). You have the rest of your life to grind away and make moves. People forget that guys like Michael Bastian and Thom Browne didn’t go to Parsons or FIT. Shit, Thom Browne went to Notre Dame and majored in Econ or something like that so I KNOW he partied as hard as he could. I’m not saying be irresponsible, but definitely have fun.
